What Are Brainwaves?

Every thought, behavior, or emotion that we have occurs due to the communication between neurons in the form of brainwaves. Brainwaves are created when synchronized electrical pulses are generated from large masses of neurons communicating together. On the other hand, high frequencies are more akin to soft, airy woodwind instruments. Although, when these brainwaves work together, it can be compared to a symphony – with each unique brainwave playing a part in a much larger arrangement. 

Brainwaves can change and transform depending on how a person is feeling. Continuing with a musical theme, these changes can promote a sense of melancholy, like a sad, slow song. At the same time, higher frequencies can be compared to a fast, pop song that makes an individual feel excited or incredibly alert. While a very generalized view of brainwaves, the reality of what is occurring can often be far more complicated. This is especially true when they are happening in different locations of the brain. 

Every individual has their own brainwave profile that determines how their experiences with the outside world are handled. When brainwaves are not balanced, different emotional or mental health problems can become apparent. Researchers have found that specific brainwave patterns could amplify these feelings or generate them without notice. Many times, over-arousal of particular brain regions can be linked to anxiety, nightmares, insomnia, impulsive behaviors, anger, and much more. 

Any process that changes perception will also simultaneously alter brainwaves. Sometimes this may be done through chemical interventions, like prescription medicines, or non-invasive and non-medicinal methods like neurofeedback.
